Blackjack for Beginners

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games for many reasons — it’s easy to play, has great odds and is known worldwide. It is also commonly known as 21 because the game aims to beat the dealer with higher-value cards or a value equal to 21. Blackjack is a game that anyone can learn to play. Learn more about what the rules of blackjack are and tips to master it.

Step-By-Step Guide to Blackjack Rules and Tips

The casino blackjack rules and method of play are simple and easy to understand. You’ll be on your way to mastering this game with some practice.

The Rules for Playing Blackjack

Blackjack is a card game played with one to eight decks of standard 52 playing cards, excluding the jokers.

The dealer begins the game by dealing two cards to each player face up. The dealer will also have two cards, but one stays face down. You’ll decide your playing options while keeping your and the dealer’s card values in mind. Your objective is to beat the value of the dealer’s cards. You aim to get a higher value or an amount of 21, but you will lose the bet if you go over 21. Unlike many other card games, you play against the dealer in blackjack, not the other players.

Calculating Card Values

Each card has a value attached to it. Your total value will determine whether you win or lose.

  • Card numbers two to 10 count at their face value.
  • The jacks, queens and kings each have a value of 10.
  • Aces have a value of one or 11. This value changes depending on how it helps a player’s hand. For example, if the 11 will increase the player’s value to over 21, the value can be one. Ultimately, it is up to you as the player to decide.

Blackjack Terminology

Before you start playing blackjack, you need to know some terms to understand what happens during the game. Some common terminology you might hear includes the following:

  • Soft hand: This hand contains an ace with a face value of 11.
  • Hard hand: This hand has an ace with a face value of one.
  • Push: A push is when the dealer and player have the same value. In this case, the player gets their bet back, and nobody wins.
  • Bust: A bust is when a player or the dealer has a hand valued over 21 and loses.
  • Blackjack: This term refers to a hand with a face value of 10 and an ace on the first dealt hand. This hand beats all others except a matching one.
  • Hole card: This is the dealer’s card that is dealt face down.

Playing Blackjack

Now that you know the basic rules and terminology of blackjack, let’s look at how you play this game.

  • Buy chips: You lay down the cash you want to exchange for casino chips at the table. The dealer will then count out the number of chips that match the money you have laid down. Once you have your chips, you can handle them and place your bet.
  • Place your bet: At the beginning of the round, you can place your bet using your chips. Each casino has a minimum and maximum limit, depending on its rules and location regulations.
  • Dealer deals cards: After placing bets, the dealer deals clockwise one card to each player facing up. The dealer’s card stays face down. The dealer deals another card to each player face up. Now each player has two cards face up, and the dealer has one face down and one face up.
  • Play your hand: The player at the dealer’s left begins. Add the total of your cards to decide how to play your hand. You have a blackjack if you have an ace and a 10-value card. If no one has a blackjack, the dealer points at each player for them to decide how to play. You have five options, which we cover below.
  • The dealer plays their hand: Unlike the players, the dealer plays their cards the same way every time — they flip over the face-down card. If the dealer doesn’t have a blackjack, but you do, you win two to three times your wager. If the dealer’s hand is 16 or less, they take additional cards. If their total is 17 or more, they move on to the next player. If their hand consists of an ace and six, they may take additional cards because an ace is flexible.
  • The dealer pays out: Once everyone plays their hands, the dealer pays out to everyone who won. If the dealer busts, they pay one times the wager to each play still on the table. If the dealer’s hand is between 17 and 21, it becomes a matter of who has the higher hand. If the dealer does, they sweep your bet. If you do, the dealer pays one times your wager. If your hands are equal, it’s a push which means you get your wager back but no additional money.

Playing Options

You can play your hand one of five ways. Sticking to a basic strategy will help you decide how to play your hand.

  • Stand: If you’re happy with your first two cards, you can stand, and the dealer will move to the next player.
  • Hit: When you choose to hit, the dealer issues you another card face up to increase your value. There is no limit to the cards you can draw other than going over 21.
  • Doubling down: If your cards are advantageous, you can double down. In this case, you’ll place a bet equal to the first, and the dealer will give you one more card.
  • Split: Two cards of equal value allow you to make a second wager. The dealer will split the hand and issue two more cards so you have two hands.
  • Surrender: If you don’t like the hand, you can give it up and get half your original bet back.

Blackjack Tips for Beginners

Blackjack is a fun and exciting game. As a beginner, you can improve your skills and get on your way to playing like a pro with a few tips.

  • Stay away from insurance: If you’re offered insurance in blackjack, it’s better to decline. Some players swear by insurance, but the more you take insurance, the more money you will lose.
  • Learn to play any hand: To get good at blackjack, master the basic strategy, rules, skills and etiquette. With this knowledge, you can play your best, no matter your dealt cards.
  • Know when to double down: When the dealer has a low card, doubling down is a good option as opposed to when they have a high card. You can double down on anything, but it’s wise to do so only on a nine, 10 or 11 face value.
  • Understand the splitting strategy: It’s best to split when you will win more money, lose less money or when you want to turn your losing hand into a winning one.
  • Know when to draw: When the dealer draws a high card, the odds are in your favor. However, if they draw a low card, be cautious about the cards you draw. For example, standing and letting the dealer go bust or over 21 may be your best option if the dealer draws a six.
